YMCA of Honolulu to close branch near Ala Moana Center for redevelopment project in 2015

The YMCA of Honolulu Central branch across from Ala Moana Center will temporarily close on Feb. 28 for a redevelopment project that will result in a smaller Y building next to a 128-unit condominium on its 1.8-acre property on Atkinson Drive, a spokeswoman confirmed to PBN on Monday.

It’s estimated that it will take about 20 months for construction with a planned reopening of the new condo and YMCA in November or December 2016, Lisa Ontai, spokeswoman for the Honolulu-based nonprofit told PBN.

The proposed condo, called “Aloha Kai,” came under some criticism with concerns arising over obstructed view plains and traffic, but ultimately, those concerns were not enough for the City and County of Honolulu not to approve the zone change for the project.

The new YMCA will encompass 30,000 square feet with no residential units, a swimming pool and a sophisticated aqua facility that will cater particularly to seniors.

The YMCA of Honolulu’s flagship Nuuanu branch, as PBN first reported, also is looking at undergoing a $20 million makeover, including a $5 million parking structure above its surface parking lot, as part of an eight-phase master plan.

Ontai said it expects to conduct a feasibility study regarding this branch in the next three to four months to determine which renovation projects it could move forward on to launch a capital campaign for.

On Monday, the YMCA said it is looking to either sell or lease its Atherton branch in Manoa, directly across from the University of Hawaii campus, which could end up leading to the closure of the branch that has origins that date back to 1908 when the building was developed to facilitate student conferences on the UH Manoa campus.

In 1932, the Charles H. Atherton House was donated to the YMCA to be utilized as a resident facility for university students, its website said.

Rich travelers set sights on overseas game hunting

The number of Chinese going abroad for trophy hunting has grown tenfold in the past five years, as wealthy Chinese travelers increasingly seek out wild and exotic experiences.

Scott Lupien, CEO of 52 Safari International Hunting Club, a leading outbound hunting company based in Beijing, said that few people went abroad to hunt before 2010, and now the number is increasing. Destination countries include Tanzania, South Africa, Mexico, New Zealand and Canada.

“In 2009, there were only two groups, in total seven people went on safari. Last year, we got 25 groups with 68 people,” he said.

Lupien predicted that the number is going to be higher this year.

“When we started in 2008, only a few clients showed an interest in hunting, and we had to work hard to develop the market,” said Keith Wang, Jiananmd’s general manager. “Now, driven by strong domestic demand, we have more diversified travel products.”

For a minimum of 69,800 yuan ($11,200), Chinese tourists can join a 10-day safari-hunting trip to South Africa and bring back four trophies: a Baikal corner antelope, zebra, warthog and high oryx. For 960,000 yuan ($154,000), they can hunt a 4.5-ton white rhinoceros.

According to New Weekly, in Guangzhou, Chinese tourists started hunting abroad around 2004. Trophy hunting is an old sport in the West, and is now being welcomed in China, where the use of guns is tightly controlled and hunting is a rare experience.

Lupien said his targeted clients are primarily affluent people who can afford to go on trips and are allowed to travel abroad.

They range in age from 16 to 63 years old, and they receive training from professional hunters.

Hunting rights are purchased from the host countries, and they obtain a permit from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora if the animal is rare.

But along with more media exposure has come a lot of criticism.

Public debate about trophy hunting centers on the morality of sport hunting and the extent to which the money paid by trophy hunters benefits the game animals and the local economy.

Alibaba, lenders team up for SME financing

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd teamed up with seven banks on Tuesday, jointly offering loans of up to 10 million yuan ($1.6 million) to China’s small and medium-sized enterprises as the e-commerce conglomerate looks to further build a credit rating system based on online transaction histories.

The cooperation involves Bank of China Ltd, China Construction Bank Corp, Ping An Bank Co Ltd, China Merchants Bank Co Ltd, Bank of Shanghai Co Ltd, Postal Savings Bank of China Co Ltd and Industrial Bank Co Ltd.

According to the Hangzhou-based e-commerce giant, companies that had export transactions of more than $100,000 through Alibaba’s online platforms over the past six months can apply for such loans. They can get 1 yuan worth of bank credit for every $1 in exports.

The online transaction record is the only thing required for the loan.

Wu Minzhi, vice-president of Alibaba Group, said that about 89 percent of SMEs in China find it difficult to get loans because they can not satisfy banks’ requirements.

“As an e-commerce company with lots of transaction data on our platforms, we want to make it easy for all of the export-focused companies to do business,” Wu said.

By narrowing the credit gap between SMEs and banks, Alibaba is looking at the bigger picture of building an environment based on big data that can facilitate every aspect of trade, from information to data and logistics, he said.

Wei Qiang, general manager of Shenzhen One Touch Business Services Co Ltd, Alibaba’s export service subsidiary, said that more than half of the export-focused companies are expected to move their brick-and-mortar trade business to online platforms in the next 10 years.

“That will create a trade service market that is estimated to be as big as 10 trillion yuan,” he said.

As they cope with rising production costs in China, many Chinese exporters are keen to get financing services. He Guodong, manager of Shenzhen Xingjisheng Electronics Co Ltd, said he secured a loan of 5 million yuan from China Construction Bank through the financing service offered by Alibaba.

“My company had an export volume of 260 million yuan in 2013. In the past, banks rarely lent to us, because they didn’t trust the financial data we offered,” he said. He said transaction records provided by Alibaba are very convincing, as it acts as the third party for such transactions.

Li Ye, an analyst at the Internet consultancy Analysys International, said traditional banks can actually benefit from the financing service provided by Alibaba.

“The costs for banks to do due diligence in order to grant loans to SMEs are very high. There are so many SMEs and the amounts they want to borrow aren’t much compared with big enterprises. So big data can be used as an important way for banks to control credit risks without making heavy investments,” she said.

Rich Chinese tourists have been boosting tourist industries around the world, but that will soon change. The first 300 Chinese space tourists have booked flights to space via Taobao, the biggest online retailer in China, according to media reports, including WSJ and Shanghai List.
“Chinese e-commerce giant, Taobao, take their platform to new extremes as they provide an exclusive broker service for Dutch Space Expedition Corp’s (SXC)”,” according to Shanghai List.
Astro-tourists will have to pass certain criteria and tests before blast off: “People in good health over 18 years old, less than 2 meters in height and 125 kilograms in weight can apply for the space tour programs. But only after passing a medical exam and training programs can the applicants fly into space,” reported Escn.cn.

“We have published one the very first article about Space travel in the Shanghai Travelers’ Club magazine last year”, said Pierre Gervois, Publisher of China Elite Focus Magazines. “This first article was about Space Expedition Corporation, and we see today the result: this great company is now recognized by High Net Worth Chinese as the leading space travel organization”.
“Chinese consumers have a high appetite for ‘challenging’ tourism activities,” said Deng Weixian, SXC Asia Pacific chief executive, in the WSJ report. He added that space will be the new destination for these Chinese travelers with adventurous appetites.

China will become the world’s largest mobile phone market by revenue for the first time by year end, overtaking the United States, an industry report said. Internet guru Mary Meeker has identified the country as the most mobile nation in the world.

Phone sales will reach $87 billion in China during 2014, a jump of 53 percent year-on-year. That compares with $60 billion projected sales in the US, Strategy Analytics said.

Smartphones dominate sales. Chinese shoppers will buy more than 400 million smartphones this year, according to local research company Analysys International. The amount is on track to break 500 million by 2016, it said.

Meeker acknowledged China’s role in the global mobile Internet sector. The world’s second-largest economy is moving swiftly to become a leader in mobile commerce, helped with applications installed on smartphones, according to Meeker. She is a partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

As of last year, more than 500 million Chinese were using mobile devices – primarily smartphones – to connect to the Internet, according to the China Internet Network Information Center. The penetration rate of mobile Internet users rose to a record 81 percent in 2013.

China beat the US in terms of smartphone shipments in 2012.

The growth in mobile devices is driven by the country’s rapid shift to fourth-generation telecommunications technologies, analysts said.

Leading players, such as Samsung Electronics Co, Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and Lenovo Group Ltd, have pledged to expand their distribution channels, and a widening product offering is diversifying demand in China.

Although China leads the global mobile phone market in many ways, the Strategy Analytics report said the US is most likely to remain the most valuable market by profit for a while.

The world’s leading smartphone brands may find it difficult to maintain a high growth rate in China, where analysts said the high double-digit expansion may be nearing its end. Additionally, local players are vigorously expanding businesses on their home turf.

Lenovo, better known for its PC business outside China, is betting on smartphones for future profit. The Beijing-based company became the second-largest smartphone vendor in China by the end of the first quarter, data from Analysys International showed. Its 12.3 percent market share only lags behind Samsung.

Coolpad – Yulong Computer Telecommunication Scientific (Shenzhen) Co Ltd – as well as Huawei and Xiaomi Corp enjoyed near double-digit market share and Apple’s share dropped to less than 7 percent.

Bryan Wang, China head at consultancy Forrester Research Inc, said 4G is a necessary feature for companies such as Xiaomi to put into their portfolio as Chinese are eager for faster Internet speeds.
